Indonesian-Chilean Chamber of Commerce Weekly News: Copper Fever, ASEAN Meeting and Export Growth

By Anonymous (not verified), 1 October, 2025

The Indonesian-Chilean Chamber of Commerce and Culture is pleased to share the latest developments in the economic and diplomatic relations between Indonesia, Chile and the broader ASEAN community.

The global copper market has seen a significant surge, with prices projected to reach unprecedented levels. This is due to concerns over copper supply following operational interruptions at the Grasberg mine in Indonesia, the world's second-largest mineral deposit. The rise in copper prices has brought positive news for Chile's fiscal coffers, with copper reaching its second-highest level of the year on the London Metal Exchange, closing at US$4.64.

Furthermore, Chile's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, recently met with ambassadors from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The fruitful relationship between Chile and ASEAN was discussed, with a focus on shared priorities such as sustainable growth, commercial diversification, and inclusive development. The meeting underscores the strengthening ties between Chile, Indonesia, and the broader ASEAN community.

In terms of trade, Chilean food exports have seen a significant increase, growing by 9.5% from January to June 2025. This growth has resulted in a historical record, with exports reaching USD 12.46 billion. Additionally, Chile's copper exports amounted to US$30.722 billion between January and July 2025, representing 61% of the total reached in 2024. China continues to be the largest recipient of Chile's copper exports, accounting for 50% of shipments.

Lastly, Chilean salmon has been making waves in international markets. According to the SalmonChile Sustainability Report, a variety of salmon products are being tailored to meet the tastes of different customers worldwide. The U.S. market favors fresh Atlantic salmon fillets, while the Brazilian market prefers whole salmon.

We hope these updates provide valuable insights into the evolving economic and diplomatic landscape between Indonesia, Chile, and the ASEAN community. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.
