Chile and Indonesia have taken significant steps to strengthen their bilateral trade relations, focusing on modernization, efficiency, and mutual cooperation. The implementation of Electronic Phytosanitary Certificates (ePhyto) marks a milestone in streamlining trade processes between the two nations. Effective October 1st, this system eliminates the need for paper documents, facilitating the exchange of horticultural, forestry, and plant propagation materials, as well as re-export certificates. This initiative, led by Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and Indonesia's Quarantine Authority (IQA), reflects the strong collaboration between both countries in ensuring sanitary guarantees while reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
In addition to the ePhyto system, Indonesia has officially recognized Chile as a fruit fly-free country, a designation that simplifies the export of fresh fruits to the Indonesian market. This recognition, achieved through sustained technical collaboration between SAG and IQA, opens new opportunities for Chilean exporters and reinforces Chile's reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality agricultural products. Domingo Rojas Philippi, Director of SAG, emphasized that this achievement underscores Chile's commitment to maintaining its sanitary standards and fostering strong ties with key markets like Indonesia.
Further enhancing bilateral relations, Chile's National Customs Service recently hosted a delegation from Indonesia to strengthen technical cooperation and modernize trade processes. The visit, attended by 28 Indonesian representatives from both the public and private sectors, focused on improving risk management, logistics, and supply chain efficiency. Christian Córdova Torre, Acting National Director of Chile's Customs Service, and Epiphania Riris Wusananingdyah, Director of South America and the Caribbean at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the discussions, highlighting the mutual interest in fostering trade growth.
- The implementation of ePhyto certificates simplifies trade procedures for silvoagricultural products.
- Indonesia's recognition of Chile as fruit fly-free accelerates fresh fruit exports.
- Customs cooperation aims to modernize processes and enhance bilateral trade efficiency.
These developments come at a time when Chile seeks to expand its fruit exports to Indonesia, a market that imports over $1.5 billion worth of fresh fruit annually. Despite Chile's shipments growing by 15% in the last season, there remains significant potential to increase its market share. The introduction of digital certifications and streamlined processes is expected to play a crucial role in deepening trade relations and unlocking new opportunities for Chilean exporters.
